Job Description

Job title: Junior Graphic Designer  
Accountable to: Graphic Designer 
Contract length: We anticipate this is a 3-month post, possible potential to extend  
Hours per week: 35 (Monday-Friday 9 AM – 5 PM) 
Grade: 3 
Service: Brand and Creative Services 
Department: Communications and External Affairs, University of the Arts London (UAL) 
Location: Hybrid, co-located, minimum 2 days a week at 272 High Holborn or other UAL colleges

Interviews: Held remotely online via Teams on Monday 3 April and Tuesday 4 April

 

Purpose of role

 

With the launch of our strategy, ‘The world needs creativity’ in March 2022, we are aligning our team activities with it to support the delivery of this vision and our social purpose. We understand the urgency of this requirement and want to drive changes from the heart of University, having an active role in delivering creative solutions to the world.


As part of leaning into these unique challenges and opportunities we are looking for a Freelance Junior Graphic Designer to join us in the UAL Brand and Creative Services team. We are looking for a design-focused, organised creative problem solver who will report into, assist and support the Graphic Designer, as well the wider team. An energetic team player who gets as excited about the big picture as well as the small details, diligent and not afraid of rolling their sleeves up. Duties and responsibilities 

 

Principal responsibilities 

    • Working with the team in the creation of creative, effective, on brand design assets, across digital and print, based on an understanding of current multi-channel communication campaigns.
    • To creatively problem solve and critically assess design briefs 
    •  To support the team delivering appropriate, well researched responses to briefs, using design thinking methodologies and providing a variety of design options as and when requested.
    •  To actively participate in ideation and feedback sessions, provide input and share ideas with the team.
    •  To be confident presenting work at different stages of the design process, with the design team and colleagues.
    •  To be able to give and receive constructive feedback to the team and apply that to develop work.
    •  To join regular meetings with designers and colleagues commissioning work. 

 

Departmental ways of working  

    • Report to and assist the Graphic Designer. Support the wider Creative Services team on the progression of multiple briefs.
    • Managing time and projects simultaneously to meet deadlines.
    •  Working closely with colleagues across the organisation, taking a joined-up approach to design work and foster a positive culture of collaboration. 

 

Other responsibilities  

    • Advocate for design thinking fundamentals and creative problem solving for our team and across the organisation.
    • Work with our Brand team to protect the brand and to strengthen our visual identity.
    •  Assume other reasonable duties consistent with your role, which may be assigned to you anywhere within the University.

Personal Specification

Specialist knowledge and qualifications 

 
    • Degree or professional qualification in graphic design or relevant discipline. 
    • Demonstrates a good understanding of the creative application of graphic design, typography, colour and photography.
    •  Good understanding of design thinking methodologies.
    •  Experience in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator). 
    •  Working knowledge in Microsoft Office suite (especially PowerPoint and Word)
    •  Basic knowledge in After Effects.
    •  Experience in Trello, Miro and Figma a bonus. 

 

 Relevant experience
 
    • Intern or working experience in internal, freelance or agency design roles.
    • Successfully delivered projects that demonstrate a strong flair for creative visual communication of content and attention to detail.
    •  Experience producing high-quality designs for multi-channel campaigns including digital and animated assets, as well as printed materials.
    •  Experience following and applying brand guidelines.
    •  Knowledgeable about UAL and passionate about our purpose and values.
    •  Knowledge of preparing design for print a bonus.

    •  Communicates effectively orally, in writing and using visual media.
    •  Active participant in feedback workshops, both with clients and the team.
