Job Description

The AKO Storytelling Institute is looking for a graphic designer a designer with a proven track record working on projects for the University of the Arts London (UAL) to design the digital versions (that can also be printed if needed) of three professional reports from concept to completion for publishing on our website and for online distribution to our partners. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of UAL's and the Institute's visual identity and brand guidelines, with the ability to produce polished, publication-ready layouts. You will be responsible for the end-to-end design of the reports, including typography, layout, infographics, and print/digital formatting.
The design should
  • adhere to UAL design and accessibility guidelines
  • complement existing design styles for AKO Storytelling Institute to support a consistent brand identity
  • be visually engaging, easy to read and accessible (not dry or academic), using design to draw the eye to key information and recommendations
  • feel contemporary, thoughtful and culturally literate — more like a magazine or art book than a traditional charity report. It needs to balance seriousness with creativity, reflecting the report’s core argument that culture shapes how we understand the world.

In addition to designing the reports, responsibilities include:

Developing and implementing the required branding and accessibility guidelines.
Creating cohesive and visually appealing projects.
Collaborating with the Storytelling team to ensure design consistency.

Each report is between 30-40 pages long and should take up to 40 hours to design. Any extra hours beyond the 40 will need to be agreed with the Storytelling Institute director first.

Personal Specification

Ideal candidates should possess the following qualities:
  • A recent graduate holding a degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, or a related discipline from a recognised institution.
  • Demonstrable experience working on design projects for or in collaboration with the University of the Arts London, whether through placements, live briefs, or freelance work.
  • A strong portfolio showcasing editorial and layout design skills, with examples of long-form document or report design.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard design software, including Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • A solid understanding of typography, grid systems, and visual hierarchy as applied to professional publication design.
  • Familiarity with brand guidelines and the ability to work within an established visual identity framework.
  • Experience preparing files for both print and digital output, including an understanding of colour profiles, bleed, and accessibility considerations.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage and organise complex documents across multiple pages.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to take direction, respond to feedback, and meet agreed deadlines independently.
  • A proactive and self-motivated approach to working freelance, with the ability to manage time effectively across two concurrent design projects.
