Project Overview
UAL's Student Marketing, Recruitment and Admissions team is producing a photography campaign to accompany our 2026–2027 international recruitment materials. The shoot will take place at Lock Studios, Studio 1 (50 De Beauvoir Crescent), 24th-26th June 2026.
The campaign celebrates the diversity of UAL's student body, connecting students' cultural identities to their creative practices. Each student will be photographed in a styled studio environment alongside culturally significant objects or their own work. The resulting images will be used across the prospectus, paid advertising, social media, and print materials.
The photography series will create a visual bridge between students' cultural identities and their creative practices at UAL, with the message that coming to London to study is not leaving home behind, but bringing it with you.
Role Summary
We are looking for an experienced Make-Up Artist to work across all three shoot days, ensuring each student subject looks their best on camera. The role also involves a short planning phase prior to the shoot — including coordination with the stylist and individual students — to agree looks in advance.
This is a role with creative flexibility: while some looks will be clean and understated, others may be more bold and expressive, depending on the student's personality and work. The make-up artist will need to bring strong professional judgement to each subject, adapting to a wide range of skin tones and individual preferences.
Dates and Commitment
• Pre-shoot coordination: approximately 2–3 hours (remote, timing flexible)
• Shoot Day 1 (24 June): full day — 3–4 students
• Shoot Day 2 (25 June): full day — 5–6 students
• Shoot Day 3 (26 June): full day — 3–4 students, wrap
For a total of 12 students.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-shoot
• Review the brief, reference imagery, and student profiles ahead of shoot week
• Liaise with the stylist and each student to agree their look in advance, ensuring cohesion between make-up, outfit, set, and the student's own cultural or creative identity
• Advise students on any preparation (e.g. skincare, arriving with clean skin)
• Prepare kit and sourcing plan — noting what materials may be available from students' own collections
On set
• Apply make-up for each student subject across all three shoot days
• Maintain looks throughout the day, including touch-ups between shots
• Adapt approach to a wide range of skin tones, ensuring excellent on-camera results across the full cohort
• Range of looks from clean and natural to more expressive and creative, led by each student's individual character and work
• Collaborate closely with the stylist on set to ensure overall visual cohesion
• Work efficiently within shoot schedule —3-4 students per day
Materials and Kit
The make-up artist is expected to supply their own professional kit. We may be able to expense a limited contribution toward consumables used — this will be discussed and agreed at briefing. Where a student's own products are suitable and they are happy for them to be used, this is welcomed.
The photographer has recommended low-UV, matte products to ensure strong results across the range of skin tones being photographed. Please ensure your kit is equipped accordingly.
