Job Description

About the work

The UAL Creative Computing Institute is rebuilding the research section of its website.

CCI runs funded research with AHRC, UKRI, and industry and civic partners. However our Research website pages are out pf date.

This role fixes that. You will help turn a pile of raw submissions from academic staff into a research section that is accurate, current, properly credited, and makes the case that CCI is one of the UK's leading centres for creative AI research.

It is a short, intense, visible project with a end of Oct launch date, and the person who does it will have their fingerprints on how a major UAL institute presents its research.

What you will do

This role covers four strands, and we are looking for someone who can do all four. That combination — structure, build, words and image — is exactly what a creative technologist is trained to hold together, and it is why we are recruiting from the UAL pool.

Information architecture. Help shape how the research section is structured: how projects, people, funders and research groups relate to each other, and what a repeatable project page and researcher profile look like. You will work to a content model rather than inventing one page at a time.

Content build. Build and populate pages in the UAL content management system. This is CMS work within existing UAL components and templates, not software development — if you have built sites, this will feel straightforward. Accuracy is the demanding part: names, roles, funders and grant references all have to be right.

Copy. Write and edit project write-ups and press-facing copy from researcher submissions and short interviews. Turning a dense academic description into something a journalist, a funder or a prospective student will actually read is a core part of the job.

Design. Produce page headers and pick photography for feature images to UAL brand, preparing imagery supplied by researchers, and making sure every image is correctly credited and carries meaningful alt text.

Essential

  • Hands-on experience with a web CMS
  • A clear eye for structure: you can look at messy source material and see how it should be organised
  • Strong, confident writing and editing in English, and the judgement to cut
  • Design skills sufficient to produce clean page headers and feature images to an existing brand (Figma, Adobe CC or equivalent)
  • Accessibility awareness — alt text, heading structure, colour contrast, WCAG basics
  • Careful, accurate, and comfortable chasing academics for missing information
  • Knowledge of HTML/CSS

Desirable

  • Experience working with academics or in a research, gallery or publishing context
  • Familiarity with how research is credited — PI, Co-I, funders, grant references
  • Interest in AI, creative technology or digital culture
  • Experience producing copy for press or comms

How we will work

You will work directly with the project lead against clearly defined weekly milestones, with a weekly check-in plus availability on Slack.

To apply

Send a CV and a short portfolio or three links to relevant work. Between them we would like to see something you built or published, something you designed, and something you wrote — ideally a piece explaining something technical to a non-technical reader.
