Job Description

Location: Working from your own workspace and working with your own equipment
Engagement: Initial paid sampling project, with potential for ongoing work

This exciting emerging fashion brand combining contemporary tailoring with influences from the 1960s and 1970s is seeking an experienced pattern cutter and sample machinist who can independently develop patterns and sew wearable garment samples.

The initial project will focus on flared trousers. The aim is to develop three to four separate garment samples over time, with further work available as the collection develops.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret design references, measurements and existing garments supplied by the brand.

  • Create or adapt a trouser pattern, cut the fabric and sew a basic wearable first sample.

  • Work towards an initial eight-hour allocation per sample, with feasibility and construction details agreed before starting.

  • Review fit and proportions with the founder, then carry out agreed pattern amendments and sample refinements.

  • Flag any construction issues or additional time required promptly.

  • Supply the resulting patterns and completed samples to the brand.

Personal Specification

Essential requirements

  • Demonstrable experience in both pattern cutting and sample sewing, particularly tailored trousers.

  • Your own suitable workspace, sewing equipment and pattern-cutting tools.

  • Ability to work independently from references and a clear design brief.

  • Strong understanding of trouser fit, balance, proportion and construction.

  • A practical approach to achieving the intended silhouette within an agreed time allowance.

  • A portfolio or examples of relevant work.

  • The role would suit someone studying or recently graduated in:

  • Bespoke tailoring
  • Pattern cutting
  • Fashion design technology
  • Menswear or womenswear
  • Garment construction

Sampling expectations

The initial eight-hour allocation is intended to produce a basic wearable development sample for assessing silhouette, fit and proportions. Fit corrections, further pattern development and a more refined sample will be allocated additional paid time, agreed in advance.

Please apply with examples of relevant work, your availability and confirmation that you have your own workspace and equipment.
