Job Description

This role is a key part of the Gallery and Events team at Central Saint Martins (CSM) where we are looking for reliable and motivated Gallery Assistants to support the day-to-day operations of the Lethaby Gallery and support our public engagement programme.  

As Gallery Assistant you will play a vital role in ensuring a welcoming and professional visitor experience whilst also contributing creatively to events, such as running exhibition tours or workshops, working closely with the Duty Manager and Creative Producer.  

The ideal candidate will be dependable, proactive and confident performing operational tasks with a keen interest in engaging diverse audiences and our cultural partners. 

 

Operations 

 

When on duty, the Gallery Assistant will have visitor experience at the forefront, managing gallery operations and other tasks. 

  • Have excellent time management, arriving promptly to start your shift at the scheduled time 

  • Helping the Duty Manager to open the gallery, ensuring it is tidy and safe for the public 

  • Be able to organise and prioritise tasks given by Duty Manager and Creative Producer 

  • Conducting regular walkarounds, ensuring that work is running smoothly and the space remains clear and tidy 

  • Resetting workshop or activity spaces in the exhibition where applicable, and encouraging the public to interact with them 

  • Communicate confidently, with stakeholders across the College 

  • Ensure you have an understanding of fire escape routes and exit routes are clear and useable and understand what to do if an issue arises 

 

Public Engagement 

  • Confident in talking about the exhibition with members of the public, ensuring any gaps in knowledge are filled by speaking to Duty Manager or Creative Producer 

  • Contribute to the development and delivery of events, such as guided tours or engagement workshops 

  • Support work with our cultural partners, neighbours and external partners 

  • Conduct surveys with members of the public, as directed by the Creative Producer 

  • Ensure any issues with work in the exhibition is quickly reported to the Duty Manager and signage is used to indicate when work is out of order

Personal Specification

Essential 

 

  • An interest, passion and willingness to learn about exhibition production, gallery education and cultural event planning 

  • Good knowledge and understanding of the range of exhibitions in the Lethaby Gallery and Window Galleries 

  • A willingness and interest to work and collaborate across disciplines 

  • Available to attend occasional meetings on Wednesday afternoons to discuss upcoming events and touring opportunities 

  • Plans and prioritises work to achieve objectives on time 

  • Uses creativity to solve problems 

 

Desirable skills 

  • Experience with community arts and socially engaged practice 

  • Interest in working in a cultural institution
