Job Description

Why become a Climate Advocate?

Climate Advocates are student partners at LCC. They have a say in LCC’s curriculum and culture, and work to co-create initiatives that improve the student experience. Apply if you want to:

  • Be a champion for climate and social justice

  • Develop skills in advocacy, communication and community leadership

  • Have an impact on what and how courses are taught

  • Learn more about decolonising the curriculum

  • Join a community of passionate, like-minded people

  • Develop your own ideas into a project that makes a difference at LCC

What will you do as a Climate Advocate?

As a Climate Advocate, you’ll be supported by the Climate Advocate Coordinator and your peers to develop your ideas and creative practice in order to make an impact. You’ll work primarily on climate justice projects, with the understanding that climate justice intersects heavily with other liberation and justice causes. You’ll also have the opportunity to work with other student partners such as LCC Changemakers and Climate Advocates from other UAL colleges.

LCC Climate Advocates are employed to contribute to UAL’s Climate Action Plan and take a holistic approach to supporting the embedding of climate, social & racial justice principles into courses and culture at LCC.

You will build relationships with a range of students and staff to support activities which enable schools, programmes and courses to implement change.

Climate Advocates play a key role in understanding students’ viewpoints on climate justice within the curriculum. You will engage with college and course teams to understand the multi-layered approach LCC and UAL are taking to address the climate crisis; and you’ll collaborate with academic programmes to develop curriculum co-design projects for the coming academic year.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet with the Climate Advocate Coordinator to establish workplan for the year and parameters of the role.

  • Participate in induction workshops organised by the Coordinator. This may include the Climate Emergency Interactive Film, Principles Workshop, Curriculum Design and Carbon Literacy Training.

  • Meet regularly with the Climate Advocates team to coordinate work – this will likely be 1 in-person meeting per month at LCC, plus additional meetings online/in person as required.

  • Gather feedback from students about Climate Justice, Climate Emergency and Sustainability in the curriculum.

  • Contribute to course reapproval, validation and modifications processes where appropriate.

  • Work with the Senior Educational Developers, Programme Directors and course teams on co-designed curriculum projects to further strengthen climate justice within the curriculum.

  • Contribute to LCC/UAL communications about activities and projects.

  • Contribute to written reports and visual representations of the work undertaken.
