Job Description

UAL's Central Marketing Team is looking for a UX/Graphic Designer to design and build a new suite of creative, accessible, and modular Mailchimp email templates. This project's outputs will replace the current central marketing team's email marketing visual identity.
 
The successful candidate with combine UX thinking, visual design expertise, and HTML email development skills to create templates that are accessible, responsive, and easy for internal teams to edit.
 

Key Responsibilities

UX & Design

  • Conduct a light audit of current email templates and identify UX and accessibility improvements
  • Design a modular email template system (e.g. text blocks, image blocks, event listings, CTA components)
  • Develop clear hierarchy and strong calls-to-action
  • Ensure designs are mobile-first and responsive
  • Balance creativity with clarity and usability
  • Incorporate a strong institutional “We are UAL” identity

Accessibility & Usability

  • Apply WCAG accessibility principles to layouts, colour contrast, typography, and interaction
  • Ensure readable text sizing and strong contrast ratios
  • Consider dark mode optimisation in both design and code
  • Test across major email clients and devices

Technical Development

  • Build and code Mailchimp-compatible HTML templates
  • Create reusable, modular components that are easy to edit
  • Ensure colour systems are easily adjustable (avoid hard-coded limitations)
  • Implement anchors and structured navigation where appropriate
  • Provide documentation and guidance for internal editing

Collaboration & Process

  • Work closely with the Marketing team and relevant stakeholders
  • Participate in onboarding and review sessions
  • Deliver work to agreed milestones

Personal Specification

Essential Criteria

Experience & Skills

  • Demonstrable experience designing and coding HTML email templates
  • Strong understanding of responsive and mobile-first design
  • Knowledge of accessibility best practice (WCAG principles)
  • Experience working within brand guidelines
  • Ability to design modular component systems
  • Strong visual design skills (typography, layout, hierarchy, colour)
  • Experience using Mailchimp (or similar email platforms)
  • Ability to test across devices and email clients

Technical

  • Proficiency in HTML for email (including responsive constraints)
  • Understanding of dark mode behaviour in email clients
  • Experience creating easily editable, structured templates
  • Ability to document work clearly for non-design users
